Letter of advice. A letter giving special information, as from a consignor to a consignee or from
an agent to a principal or from drawer to drawee of a bill of exchange. The term is often
abbreviated to advice.
In the foreign exchange business it is the practise for the seller of a bill of exchange to send a
letter of advice to the drawee (the one upon whom the bill is drawn). This letter of advice
constitutes notice to the drawee that the bill of exchange in question has been issued and it may
contain other information or instructions.
