Bank reserve. The reserve of a bank is the amount of lawful money it holds against deposits.
The places in which national banks are situated are divided into three classes—places which are
not reserve cities, reserve cities and central reserve cities. Places which are not reserve cities
comprise the greater number of places, national banks in which are required to maintain a reserve
of (keep on hand) 15 per cent of the amount of deposits with them, three-fifths of which reserve,
however, may be deposited by them in banks in reserve or central reserve cities. National banks in
places which are not reserve cities are unofficially designated as country banks.
